What were the faces like when the Model T picture was passed around at the Horse and Buggy convention. Imagine the gasps! And, in the corner was the man who was insistent upon raising more horses. Marshall Goldsmith said it best: "What got you here won't get you there."

"SECU" has been synonymous with "change" most recently. What are the changes and are they necessary?

Here are a few of the topics we've seen or heard:

  1. "SECU is the 2nd largest CU. We're good as we are." (It sounds like some lean on the asset size as a measure of success. Is this realistic?)
  2. "SECU members don't want digital." (Are these people different than the rest of American consumers who demand digital on a daily basis? If you don't have it, there is someone else willing to provide it - and take all their money and loans with them.)
  3. "Risk based pricing is terrible." (Is it so? Do you and I pay the same for our auto insurance? For life insurance?)
  4. "Membership expansion is frowned upon." (SECU has 2.7 million members. Only a fraction of that is actually state employees.)
  5. Others?
This is your open forum to share your thoughts. Remember that ALL comments are posted to encourage healthy and respectful debate.

  1. SECU is the 2nd largest BECAUSE of our core values, principles and dedication to the true cooperative mission of "people helping people." I don't know anyone who has a problem with digital upgrades and change. The problem is the complete change to "industry standard" with so many different operations and procedures. Many of us feel discarded and unvalued. It has been obvious that our previous values and commitment to members no longer mattered. That's the heart of the issue!

    1. Thank you for this. "Different operations and procedures" - what do you mean specifically here? Also, I'm sorry you feel discarded and unvalued. I think quite the opposite about the staff here...and I'm one of the newer employees. Everyone here has value. There are great people at SECU - newer and those that have been here for a time. I hope you know that you ARE valuable and if I knew who you were, I'd hug you!

    2. Under Mike Lord, SECU members borrowed $7 Billion from their credit union; and those same members in the same year borrowed $52 Billion at other banks and credit unions. Seems the old culture wasn’t moving the loan to share needed before risk based pricing.

  2. I really don’t understand the resistance to allow more people to join and those who treat SECU like it’s an exclusive club to join. We have had, and continue to have, a great thing going here, and I’d love to be able to share it with all my friends and neighbors who hound me about eligibility.

    1. Have them join a local credit union. Local credit unions will even do loans that SECU won't touch (motorcycles, tractors, trailers, side-by-sides, etc), and many have even better rates than SECU.

    2. Why on earth would they do that? So JB (and the rest of the “give us our ties back” tiki torch wielding army) can dox them just like he’s been doing to the board one by one?

    3. @3:25 Hi there! I see you're having trouble with a few things so I'm here to help. So person who commented is calling the OWNER of this blog a coward. They are not saying anything about the other people who are commenting. You see we already know the OWNER of the blog this is supposed to be "debunking". The OWNER of that blog outwardly states who they are and the OWNER of this blog also acknowledges that. So the point this person is trying to make in their comment is that the OWNER of this blog is a bit hypocritical for remaining anonymous. And furthermore, on the post on this blog from June 15th stated: "...cowardly 'anonymous' contributions" in reference, presumably, to the people who comment on the other blog. This is hypocritical because the OWNER of this blog is remaining anonymous and also allows for anonymous commenting on their OWN blog. Additionally, on the post made on this blog on June 20th, the OWNER of this blog made the remark: ""anonymous' posting won't always save you". To sum it all up, the OWNER of this blog seems to have a problem with the anonymity of people commenting on the other blog, meanwhile they choose to remain anonymous themself on this blog as the OWNER. This is quite hypocritical. So when you think you have some type of gotcha moment by pointing out that the person commenting here is anonymous, you actually don't. I really hope this is all cleared up for you now.

    5. Who we are isn't important. Our bios aren't the focus here. This is a forum for all voices. If we were publishing defamation, we'd put our name on it.

      "It would be extremely defamatory"

      -you're a big organization

      "For you..."

-Was industry standard part of your plan?

"Of course! LGFCU refused our offer in favor of yours. But we had to hire consultants."

-Well congratulations, you've lost billions in assets. So what's the next step of your master plan?

      "Crashing this bank.....with no retirement!"

    1. I don’t think the people following this blog are followers of Jim Hayes. We are believers in SECU and its future. We respect what has been done in the past but we realize that we must learn to adapt, like any healthy organization that wants to continue being relevant so that we can continue serving our members. Was Jim Hayes successful in executing on his plan? I would say no. We’re some of the ideas good? I would say yes. I am not against expanding our services to new members. I am not against making our rates competitive for all members. I am not against offering small business services to our members. I am not against investing in our technology to provide more convenience to our members. I am for SECU and being the trusted financial provider for all of our members. I am against having to recommend our members go elsewhere because we do not offer a needed service or competitive rate.

    2. “Change pronouns on Saturdaaay“

I keep seeing this over and over on the other blog too—bringing up how an executive is using “she/her” in her email signature. Time to crawl out from whatever rock you’re living under as this is becoming pretty common in workplaces. It’s an extremely small detail, yet so many people are up in arms about it.

When you start making jabs and snide remarks at the expense of a marginalized community, it’s not cool. Although this may mean nothing to you, gestures like this and “being seen” definitely mean a lot to some of your coworkers. I know at least one personally.

  6. On another site today, Jim Blaine stated that SECU investigated the credit scores of SEANC participants before the meeting between SEANC and the SECU Board back in March. That is a LIE. A flat out LIE. But do you expect anything else from him at this point?

    ReplyDelete
  7. That is unfortunate if he is intentionally lying or just hearing a rumor second hand. I am not a lawyer but if he is publicly posting misinformation to tarnish someone’s reputation, would that be grounds for filing a defamation lawsuit?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I am a lawyer and assuming his post is false I think it probably constitutes defamation and libel. He may have created a real problem for himself if SECU pursues.

  12. It like one of those train wrecks that you just can't take your eyes off of. After reading this page for a few months now it seems that it is probably a new hire employee of the recent Jim Hayes. If i had to put my money on it I bet it's that H&R block guy that he brought on board who has created this entire joke of a blog. I could be wrong but a lot of these things sound like him if you listen to him speak at functions. Why not just come out of the shadows? Until then I will read the train wreck and chuckle.

    1. Jim Blaine is a lot like Donald Trump. He has a huge ego, lies constantly, bullies people, lives in an alternate reality, and is not in charge any more and can’t handle it.

I think the real reason this place has gotten quiet is that the blog seemed designed to expose Blaine, but most folks already know he is nuts and abusive. So nothing new here.

    2. Correct, nothing new here. Baseless claims of lies with no actual rebuttal or a factual counter. Nice try though.
